description

Play-Asia.com says:

Based on the manga by Junji Ito, UZUMAKI is one of the best manga-film conversions based on one of Ito’s works.
--- A pretty high school girl gets involved in a series of ghostly and horrible tragedies which all relate to the strange whirlpool phenomena: a man becomes obsessed with whirlpool shaped objects; an evil girl swallowed by the whirlpool; and whirlpool-like hair. No one knows the truth behind the phenomena. How can this poor girl escape from the entanglement of the terrible whirlpool? --- If you have ever been remotely interested in the utterly ridiculous and just plain strange things that come out of Japan, UZUMAKI is a must have. It’s wacky, it’s creepy, and it’s totally psychedelic. The visual style of the film is quite unique. Relying heavily on the appropriately creepy green tint and some very excellent camera effects, UZUMAKI is a standing point for low budget movies. The audio is also one of the films strong points, using equally zany music to match the plot and visuals. UZUMAKI could go two ways for most people. On one hand you have a fairly creepy story if you’re open minded; however those who are more closed minded will enjoy this film much more for the zany Japanese-ness which can be incredibly hilarious. Either way there is no denying that UZUMAKI stays very true to its original source and for any fan of the manga, which means a lot. Unfortunately for the people who don’t quite know what to make of it, it can be frustrating when you don’t find the bizarre story funny or can’t take it seriously enough to be freaked out by it. That’s why I had to deduct and star from it. UZUMAKI can be confusing in its intentions and for the few that can’t really decide what to make of it, it’s not that enjoyable. This movie is just like the vortex it is named after.
Well what can i say about this?
Its a great engaging movie with one pretty big fault for english viewers.
First the problem is:
When the guy is investigating the cause for al the vortex related things it goes over many many newspaper headlines in Japanese, you are actually meant to read this to understand the cause even though there is no translation for it >.<
Anyway i\'ll tell you what it is becase it wont spoil anythng seeing as though you dont get to find out unless you can read difficult Japanese kanji.
\"the vortex phenomenon is caused by artifacts recovered from the middle of the lake from a culture that worships curled up snakes\" (like the whole movie the cause is just as weird as the effect).

Anyway now what i liked about it.
The film fully emerses (excuse the spelling) in a whole nothing world, complete with trippy vortexs put on the film for viewers to play \"find the vortex\" and a great green tint to everything that makes you feel like your watching an alien planet.
The film is al about a Villiage cursed by the vortex (or Uzumaki) so anyway one such person that has truly been cursed with vortex fever its the heroines boyfriends father. The heroin (kirie) notices strange things happening and when she talks to her boyfriend (Shuichi) about he , he beleives the town is cursed and talks about his fathers obsession with vortexes. Shuichis father starts video taping snails and collects alot of vortex shaped things, he even steels the barbour shops sign.
Its not long before alot of other are being affected by the vortex curse, a girls hair becomes increasingly curly, a boy comits suicide off of the spiral stair case, another only comes to school when it rains and starts become very slow and gunky and a spiral has apeard on his back.

Anyway, this film is trippy, you can look at it two ways. A bizzare film full of weird things to laugh at, or an engaging horror that might actually freak you out.

I give it 4 stars.
