A Refreshing Change
Vagrant Story came as quite a surprise to me. All I had heard about it was that it was a game that had gotten good reviews. Aside from that, I didn't really know what the game was about. So I recently decided to give it a try many years after its release.
One of the most enjoyable aspects of Vagrant Story is its unique battle system. The environments are 3D and during battles, you target enemies that fall within range of a sphere that emits from your character. When the sphere is emitted, everything stops and you choose which part of the enemy you want to attack so long as it falls within range of the sphere. Pulling off certain patterns will result in more damage. I admit, as I progressed through the game I don't think I ever fully grasped the battle system. It can be confusing because there are a lot of different factors that contribute to battles, including a "risk" system in which damage and critical hit rate increase along with a risk meter, that also increases that the damage taken. Not to mention weapon customizations and magic, the game can be a little overwhelming. Regardless, the battle system is bound to be very satisfactory to players who enjoy planning and strategy.
The graphics are fairly impressive for a Playstation release. Looking at the different concept art and then comparing it to the game, I was surprised how well it retained its aesthetic. The story and soundtrack also compliment each other very well. There are some really nice tracks in the music that really just seems to fit with the characters and world they are in. I don't know how else to describe it but they just blend well together. I actually enjoyed the soundtrack enough to listen to it outside of the game.
Vagrant Story was definitely a game that I felt was worth the learning curve. Even though I played it a while after its release, I still think I was able to see it through fair eyes. There wasn't even really anything that bothered me about this game, so I felt this game was very solid. Definitely something that I would want to experience again.
