Play-Asia.com says:

Japan’s King of Squirm Takashi Miike directs a movie that is beautiful, harrowing and sadistic.
--- Shigeharu Aoyama is a producer who lost his wife seven years ago. His friend Yoshikawa suggests that they should hold an audition for a fake movie in order to find a new wife. He ends up falling in love 24-year-old Asami Yamasaki, and the pair have a touching friendship. However, Asami is not what she seems…. --- AUDITION was the film that made me a fan of Takashi Miike. It’s not just because he can make you enormously uncomfortable, it’s the fact that even without the cruel and sadistic violence, he’s still an amazing and classy director. When one first sees AUDITION, there is really not much you can hate about it. The film has just about the most gorgeous directing and picture composition in Japanese cinema since Akira Kurosawa. The character development is also beautiful and touching. You really feel for both Aoyama and Asami, as they both have troubled pasts. Not to mention that the chemistry between them is wonderful and stunning. For the first hour or so, the viewer is immediately put in their comfort zone and can’t possibly think of anything that could go wrong between the characters. However, we then discover that Asami has had an agonizing past and that his has affected her in more ways than one. What follows is one of the most disturbing and harrowing scenes ever done in cinema, right up there with the rape scene in IRREVERSIBLE or the Carmina Burina torture scene in SALO. I won’t spoil the surprise for you, but it’s absolutely uncomfortable and horrendous, and is positive to get the viewer squirming no matter how desensitised the viewer is to screen violence of any kind. But the real genius of AUDITION lies in it’s amazing versatility. Namely, this is one film that can be watched a second time and it will gather a new meaning and a new effect on the perception of the viewer. If you were only to watch the first hour or so, and not see the terrifying torture scene, the viewer would think that it was a quiet, classy and extremely well-paced film, not dissimilar to LOST IN TRANSLATION. If you were to watch all of it, you would have an exhilarating and breathtaking experience, since the last scene is comes totally unpredictable Finally, if you were to watch it a second time, you would find that the film has amazing tension and suspense, and would obviously see Asami in a new light. Instead of innocent and sweet, you would have a jarring and unnerving feeling about her, much like Yoshikawa has. Overall, AUDITION is, simply put, one of the best Japanese films to come out in recent times. It is an absolute must-see. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED -Max Height P.S Unfortunately the subtitles aren’t quite up to par and they have put the wrong names for some characters, namely the dogs name is “Young” but the subtitles have put it as something entirely different. Aside from that there are a few spelling mistakes but overall it doesn’t hinder the viewing experience too much. Other Takashi Miike films: HAPPINESS OF THE KATAKURIS, ONE MISSED CALL, ICHI THE KILLER, BIRD PEOPLE OF CHINA
