Ever since the game got released in the year of 1996, Capcom’s biggest franchise with over 78 million units sold worldwide as of (June 30, 2017) is most likely to make its way to every gaming system. Now, Resident Evil 7 is the eleventh main entry and 24th entry overall in the Resident Evil franchise. It is the first main series chapter to be played from a first-person. This switch of perspective goes wonders for the series and gives the players a complete feel of a new game while at the same time has so many moments that will lead the series devotees to reminisce. Though the shift to first-person may appear a drastic transition for some, Resident Evil 7 still works like a Resident Evil game.
The players will take the role of Ethan Winters, an American system engineer from Texas who is a survivor of the Dulvey Incident. This incident was a viral outbreak in Dulvey, Louisiana, caused by an unpredictable human bio-weapon with hypnotic powers, which also produced a series of massacres performed by Jack, Marguerite, and Lucas Baker – the antagonists of the game.
Ethan has a wife named Mia Winters that was gone missing since 2014. She was never seen or heard from again and Ethan presumed her to be dead. Until in July 2017, Mia sent an email to Ethan asking him to come rescue her at the hands of the Baker Family in Dulvey, Louisiana. Playing from the perspective of Ethan as he battles with the Bakers to save his wife, Mia, carries that same fear but in a unique way, and it’s for you to find out a lot on your own. Now, Resident Evil 7 is more fearful than you thought, as the first-person perspective makes the fears seem all extra personal.
Technically speaking, the sound quality of the game is astounding. Capcom is very creative in how it scares the player. This could probably be one of the exceptional sound design of any game you could ever play. The times when you go sliding through a narrow passageway, the music rises and rises that will make your heart feels like it’s going to jump out of your chest. While heading your way through a dark terrifying corridor, the simple noise of a bottle hitting the floor, the creepy sound of the door closing upstairs, pipes dropping on the floor, suddenly become completely frightening the deeper you get into the game.
Along with the brilliant sound effects of this game, what actually helps is the voices behind the characters of the Baker Family, the main enemies of this game, and they are very creepy as well. In the early part of the game, you will be seeing their family dinner, and it certainly sets the tone for what the whole game would probably be. The opponents are great characters, they’re very engaging and probably one of the best antagonists in the resident evil series. The gameplay and sound are complemented by stunning visuals, too. Capcom score this thing up, they make every bit of feature in the game seemed real.
On the other hand, as the story unfolds and this new form of the disease causes its subjects to worsen further, it triggers you from wanting to discover more. The T-Virus has stayed around for decades to the point where experts have the ability to discuss its origin, but this new virus is altered, giving us loads of mysteries to discover answers for. Resident Evil has always done a great job of conveying the story beyond cutscenes and that extends in 7 with newspaper clippings, diary notes and other things scattered in the map further embellishing the Baker’s already spellbinding story.
