Unlike Buddhism, Shintō (神道- Way of the Gods) is the native religion of Japan, its gods are the personification of astrological, geographical, and meteorological phenomena which always affect our daily life. As we can read in the Kojiki, the sacred text of Shintō, one of the most important deity of the entire pantheon is, without any doubts, Amaterasu Ōmikami (天照大御神 – The Great Divinity Illuminating Heaven), the sun goddess and supreme ruler of the Takama ga Hara (高天原 – The Plain of High Heaven) where the Kami lives.

Other than be the most important goddess of Japan, Amaterasu is frequently present in the pop-culture, such as manga and anime series Urusei Yatsura, video game series such as Shin Megami Tensei, and last but not least the beloved goddess is the main character of Ōkami, one of the most beautiful and poetic games of all time.
