The game was originally released for PlayStation 2 Consoles in October 2005 in North America and Japan. Afterwards, the game was later on released on PAL territories in February 2006. Due to the games’ success, an HD remastered version was even published for the PlayStation 3 Systems in 2011 developed by Bluepoint Games.

In addition, Shadow of the Colossus is considered as a spiritual successor of the hit cult action-adventure video game, ICO. The responsible development team for the said game is the same as to the Shadow of the Colossus. ICO was considered as a successor of the Shadow of the Colossus due to its various features that are almost similar to ICO. Like theme, style, and the storyline. The person behind the success of these games is Fumito Ueda, a Japanese video game designer. Fumito Ueda is the lead designer and director of these two outstanding games.

The game’s storyline converges on the protagonist of the game named Wander. He is a young man who fearlessly stepped into the world of monsters known as the Forbidden Land. Wander will explore this forbidden land with his horse companion and compete against the sixteen gigantic beings, simply known as colossi. Wander must defeat all the enemies to win the battle and to fulfill his ultimate purpose which is to restore the life of a girl named Mono.

Talking about the game itself, it is best known for its minimalist atmosphere and its actual gameplay which is kind of unusual for an action-adventure genre. It has no towns or dungeons like the other type of this game does have and no other characters to interact or ask help with. Even the enemies in this game are just the sixteen colossi you are going to defeat.

The challenge in this game comes in the battle with the colossi. Knowing that there are no other characters in this game, and you as a player, taking the role of Wander, have to accept the fact that you are the only one who is responsible to face and defeat these beastly giants. These giants have their own kind of weaknesses and figuring it out is your key to defeat them. Once you successfully analyzed their weaknesses, take that opportunity to easily slaughter them until their very last breath. That’s why Shadow of the Colossus has also been described as a puzzle game because of this feature. You have to make use of your brain to identify first the opponent’s weakness and use it against them.

Moreover, you and the colossi have life bars showing your remaining health. A colossus health will extremely decrease once its weak points are attacked. On the other hand, you are going to lose health points once you are attacked by a colossus’s or even a drop from their tremendous height. Throughout the game, you are only equipped with a sword and a bow of arrows. In addition, you also have Argo, your great horse companion. Argo contributes a big role in your journey in the forbidden land. First and foremost, he is your means of transportation on your journey throughout the forbidden land and fighting on horseback is essential in defeating the enemies.
