Genkai Tokki: Castle Panzers

Genkai Tokki is a series developed by Felistella and published by Compile Heart. Starting off with the initial release of Monster Monpiece in 2013, the Genkai Tokki series has expanded to four titles – including the English release of Moe Chronicle. Genkai Tokki: Castle Panzers is the latest and greatest release in the adult role-playing series, releasing for PS4 Systems last September 28, 2017, for Japan and Asia. Unfortunately you won’t run into much luck as of yet when looking for ways to play the game in English, the Japanese release is lots of fun if you don’t mind looking up menu text every so often.

How the latest release, Castle Panzers, begins…

The Game is set in the Galestia Empire during the Imperial Year 213, where not all is well. The Galestia Empire is currently in disarray, the result of a recent coup d’etat. This situation has forced the Emperor to sacrifice his own life in order to save the life of his daughter. Filled with sorrow after the death of her father, and the implications that may follow, the princess is forced into an escape with the help of her handmaiden.

As the princess makes her escape, she meets the protagonist. Our hero is oblivious to the situation that the princess has found herself in, and like a true (clueless) hero he commits himself to the care and safety of the Princess. However, it doesn’t take long before he realises the dangerous situation they are now both in. Things become even stranger when the protagonist begins hearing a mysterious voice echoing in his head, offering him power. Upon accepting, the mysterious creature Otton appears alongside a magical castle.

Otton informs the hero that he had formed a contract with the castle. Luckily, this allows him to use its power, but all things come at a price. In exchange for this new power he must sacrifice his libido, a holy triangle that relies on young and innocent girls. For a yet to be revealed explanation this means our hero is tasked to collect underwear throughout the game. Not that we’re complaining, of course.

“If you read the ancient texts in the castle, you’ll sure understand how to be released from the castle. However, I want to lend you my power in order to reach the royal castle and to take back the country!”

These were the words spoken to him by Otton. Whether he likes it or not, our hero is left with no choice but to embark on this new journey to collect underwear and win back the empire!

Switching Battle Styles is as easy as an underwear change

Some other RPGs may use crystals, weapons, talent trees and more to change jobs. Genkai Tokki: Castle Panzers stays one step ahead of the competition and allows players to change their battle style by changing the underwear used. Laundry day can make a difference on the battlefield!

The heroins in the game are programmed to change their Battle Styles based on the underwear they are dressed in. Each pair of underwear has it’s own unique ability to make use of in the battlefield. Some styles specialize in magic while other styles are meant for close-range combat. Freely set the underwear of your team before and during a battle to employ real lingerie strategy.

Venus style is built particularly for close-range physical attacks. It is identified to be one of the stronger balanced styles because of its high stats overall. This battle style gives you the power to have the extreme capacity to perform numerous hits that will overwhelm the enemies. Venus is a style preferred by melee fighters.

Knight style is another technique made especially for close-range physical attacks. Its power is high in both attack and defense. However, Knight style is weak versus magic. Compared to Venus Style the hit count is much lower, but the power it contains in a single hit is extremely powerful. This style is advisable to use against enemies with high defense.

If a close-range physical attacker exists, then it seems only fair to include a long-distance physical attack – the Gunner Style. It is a rearguard style that mainly concentrates on long-distance physical assaults with the use of a gun. In addition, it can summon high ranking monster girls which permit the player to fight away from the action. It is a combination of both Venus and Knight Styles, which fight as vanguards. Guns and monster girl summons, sounds great!

Witch style is also a rearguard style that focuses on long-distance, but as implied by the name this style makes use of magical attacks. The major difference of this style from the Gunner style is that it can summon every rank of monster girl. A great benefit of this style is that it can both attack and provide support through those monster girl summons. In addition, since this style contains the highest magical attack power among the four styles, it is outstandingly effective on enemies that have powerful physical immunity.

Where does the “Ecchi” of the Game Come In?

One of the cornerstone motifs found in ecchi games is the visibility of underwear and Genkai Tokki provides this without fail throughout the entire series. Unabashed about the level of fanservice, Compile Heart and Felistella are undeniably at the top of the craft. With great attention to detail applied to both character and scenario design, the games balances lighthearted ecchi imagery with similar audio throughout the experience.

The developers obviously have fun when coming up with and implementing new ideas into Genkai Tokki that so often epitomise the crucial humor element of the ecchi genre.

No one can deny Felistella are blatant in their fanservice, and all the Genkai Toki titles should be played with that knowledge up front, but their ability to blend moe and sexuality into their game mechanics is admirable. From stat adjusting chests, where size directly impacts gameplay, to hilariously designed characters it is no wonder Genkai Tokki is one of the most requested English releases we receive!

Having that said, make sure you know what you’re getting into with any ecchi release and expect a blend of sex and comedy! But at the end of the day it’s not just about the great assets of the characters, but the deep story of the game and how you will take good control and make the story your own.
