Shenmue I & II

PS4™ & XONE™ – EU, US & ASIA

Recently, Sega has confirmed the re-release of Shenmue Series. And now, updates for the upcoming Shenmue I & II have touched the internet. Well, big thanks to Youtuber Adam Koralik for announcing the updates.

So there are two parts on this update. First is the good news. And… we already know what’s next. Let’s take the good news first.

Good News

X-box Based Version of the Game

So first, the Shenmue I & II will be based on the Xbox Version of the game. Now, we know that a lot of Shenmue fans have an issue with that version. And as far as we know, it is particularly on the bloom effect of the game.

BUT THE GOOD THING IS, this is completely optional. You can now play the game based on your preference. Shenmue I & II gives you the option to turn it off and play it more like the Dreamcast way.

Ratio Aspect

Second is about the aspect ratio of the game. Originally, the game is built for a 4:3 full screen. And this measurement will remain on the cut scenes part. On the other hand, they have done some adjustments that shift the ratio of the screen to a 16:9. But no worries, folks. This feature of the game is totally optional. Only the cut scenes will remain to the 4:3 ratio.

Furthermore, Shenmue I & II will feature a high-resolution mode (1080p) and an original mode (480p). And you are also free to choose between the two according to your preference.

Loading Time

Next up is the loading time. In the original game, loading time is pretty sluggish. But this is not a problem anymore in the Shenmue I & II re-release. Load times have now been cut down to around 1-2 second between areas.

And so we are done with the good part of the update. So that means, we are now heading to the sad news.

Not-So-Good News

Shenmue Passport

First in line is the “No Shenmue Passport” news. If you are an avid fan of Shenmue Series, you know that this is not a good one. Shenmue Passport is a disc that mostly contains videos, maps, and character biographies. Although this doesn’t affect the gameplay, this could really mean a lot for some of the fans.

Online Features & Microtransactions

Second is the no online features such as a leaderboard and the likes in the game. Also, there are rumors that there will be a microtransaction in the game. But it is now confirmed that there will be none.

Brand Deals

And lastly, no corporate tie-on will happen in this re-release. Originally, the game had various companies involved like Timex. If you have noticed, Ryo’s watch is Timex. Another is the generic Jet Cola in the NA and EU version of the game. And if you can still remember, there are Coca-Cola vending machines in the JP version of Shenmue.

Unfortunately, these deals with those companies are no longer applied. Well, it is what it is. But that doesn’t mean that this game is not going to be a “good game.” And for sure, Sega will announce more details in the next coming weeks.
