Strongly influenced by Super Mario Bros. In 1986 he joined Konami as designer and planner of Penguin Adventure (夢大陸アドベンチャー ) an action game for MSX in which the player controls a penguin called Penta which mission is to get a magical apple who can restore the health of the Princess Penguette. Soon after its release, Penguin Adventure was acclaimed as one of the best titles for MSX; thanks to its incredible innovations such as pseudo-3D art style, multiple endings, and an incredible gameplay depth.

Selling hundreds of thousands of copies this was one of the first successes of Konami, and due to this Kojima could start to work on another project which was initially supervised by a senior colleague of him: Metal Gear. What initially was a traditional action game thanks to the MSX2 hardware limitations and Kojima’s inventiveness has been revolutionized in one of the most original and acclaimed series of all time.  With the cyberpunk adventure Snatcher in which he showed his love for cinema inserting a big number to homages from milestones of the genre such as Blade Runner and The Terminator. With a mature approach to the media; Kojima helped video games to make them what they’re now. A cultural phenomenon which overtaken the movie industry both in plot originality and revenues.
Focusing on the close link between these two kinds of visual arts, in 2001 Kojima and Konami launched a multimedia project spanned between video games and anime: Zone of the Enders!

Set at the end of the 22nd century; in Z.O.E.the humans has colonized the red planet expanding their existence until the orbit of Jupiter. Due to this fact, and the discovery of a new source of energy called Metatron the technology improved significantly. However, things aren’t going so great because the Earthly powers impose harsh and almost slaving laws and taxes on the people who live in space, calling them using the racial slur “Enders”.
Using the Metatron-fuelled mecha Orbital Frame, Z.O.E. Follows the stories of a bunch of colonists; which ultimate mission is to reshape the life on Earth and on the colonies.
So far the series is composed by three gaming chapters: “Zone of the Enders”, “Anubis: Zone of the Enders”, and “Zone of the Enders: 2173 Testament”; the OVA “Zone of the Enders: 2167 Idolo”; plus the 26 episodes’ anime “Z.O.E. Dolores, I“!

Undoubtedly the best episode is Anubis: Zone of the Enders. With an unparalleled gameplay system and a very mature story which cover themes like the loss of innocence and the morality of killing, this fast and intense game is still considered one of the greatest games for PS2.
