Assassin’s Creed Odyssey

PlayStation®4, Xbox™One, Uplay Ι Genre: Ancient Greece RPG

Sing to me of the man, Muse, the man of twists and turns driven time and again off course, once he had plundered the hallowed heights of Troy…

So begins Homer’s Odyssey one of the most important texts of the whole Western culture. Wrote around the 8th century BC, it’s the second-oldest extant work of Western literature. This poem tells the story of the Greek king Odysseus during his twenty-year journey to return to Ithaca soon after the end of the Trojan War. Relying on his wit and wiliness for survival; the Odyssey can be read as a metaphor of the everyman’s journey through life. Many aspects of common life, yes also the modern’s one, can be easily found in it including friendship, testing, wandering, and many others. These eternal features made it one of the best texts of the whole literature. In fact, during the ages, many writers tried to create their own version of the Odyssey. From the Middle-Age Irish “Merugud Uilix maicc Leirtis” to the James Joyce’s Ulysses.

Obviously, its impact doesn’t affect only the world of books; it has been often portrayed in a number of movies, operas, anime, and video games. For example, the 1981 anime Uchū Densetsu Ulysses 31(宇宙伝説ユリシーズ31) ported the story in the 31st Century, transforming the original opus in a 26-episodes long space-opera in which the hero is forced to travel across the universe before return to home. Due to its main plot, the word “odyssey” is commonly used also as a synonym for a physical or spiritual voyage marked by apparently insurmountable difficulties. And this is the meaning that denotes Assassin’s Creed Odyssey; the brand new Assassin’s Creed chapter for PS4, XB1, and Uplay.

Set in the 431 BC, this is the second episode of the Layla saga. Starring on the Egyptian-American girl Layla Hassan, which last year used the Animus to build the Assassin Brotherhood in Ancient Egypt and Rome in Assassin’s Creed: Origins, this year she has been recruited to move even farther back in time; more precisely to Ancient Greece during the second stage of the Peloponnesian War.
Fought between the 431 and the 404 BC, this long and complex conflict seen Athens and Spartans and their allies combat the most violent war in whole ancient history. With all the warfare conventions broke down; during the second Peloponnesian War soldiers and civilians from both sides witnessed atrocities previously unthinkable. This time your genetic memory is linked with two mercenaries Alexios or Kassandra, and in the modern era thanks also to the “Histories” of Herodotus you’ll control the destinies of both of them which have been also come into contact with some Isu artifacts…
