Square Enix‘s latest Japanese live stream features their brand-new unconventional story-driven game with a blend of live-action, The Quiet Man.
The Quiet Man centers on the journey of a deaf protagonist named Dane, as he discovers the reasons behind the kidnapping of songstress Lala by a strange man in a mask. Initially, one of the key features of the game is that players will “experience the world in the way Dane does” – in other words, soundless. So, the information transmission in the game such as sounds and words are eliminated.
But, this seems to be changed by now, which actually seems to be a little bit odd.
Square Enix announced that they will be adding a “New Game Plus” -esque mode with sounds and speech unlocked after the first playthrough. This will be a free update for the game which is set to release a week after the game’s launch.
The first playthrough of the game will still follow its original plan which is the lack of sound and speech, minus certain special sound effects for throwing and receiving punches. Since the first playthrough will lack sound and speech, you must pay attention to what lies ahead before your eyes and actively interpret messages. In other words, it is up to you on how you interpret the whole story.
While the second playthrough is the other way around. With the post-release update announced by Square Enix via live stream, players can experience the world of the game with sounds and speech. Therefore, the second playthrough will allow players to discover the truth of the story by introducing the full conversation.

The Quiet Man takes players beyond sound to deliver an immersive story-driven cinematic action experience, which can be completed in one sitting. In a story that unravels across a single night, players take the role of deaf protagonist Dane as he fights his way through a “soundless” world to discover the motives behind the kidnapping of songstress Lala by a mysterious masked man.
