Spike Chunsoft will be bringing its neo-noir detective adventure game, AI: The Somnium Files to the PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC globally on the 19th of September. AI: The Somnium Files is a new game directed and written by the talented Kotaro Uchikoshi who is best known for his Zero Escape series.
What’s even more interesting is that the Japanese version of the game is a multi-language edition. Yes, you read that right. Players can enjoy the Japanese version of the game with available options for various languages. Of course, the game’s voiceover is in Japanese. And for the subtitle, the supported languages include English, Japanese, and Traditional Chinese.
The game brings players in a near-future Tokyo and follows the role of detective Kaname Date tracking down a serial killer. This mystery adventure game is divided into two parts: investigation parts and somnium section.
Date’s special artificial eye helps him solve the twisted case which is mostly done in the investigation parts of the game. He uses his artificial intelligence unit Aiba’s functions to facilitate the investigation in the real world by doing X-ray vision and zooming.
On the other hand, during the somnium parts of the game, thr protagonist uses a machine called Psync Device to enter the minds of suspects or key witnesses who do not want to share information with him, in the form of dreamscapes called “somnium,” to discover evidences and extract the data by solving puzzles.
The puzzles involve examining objects and choosing an action to perform with it, and solving mental locks – obstacles standing in the way of clues – allowing the player to sink deeper into the character’s subconscious. As there is a six-minute time limit before the dreamscape collapses, and actions take time to perform, the player must be careful in deciding what to do. Within the somnium parts, Aiba takes on the form of a human woman and acts as the player avatar.

The mind never lies…
In a near-future Tokyo, detective Kaname Date is on the case of a mysterious serial killer. A date must investigate crime scenes as well as dreams on the hunt for clues. From the mind of Kotaro Uchikoshi (Zero Escape series director), with character design by the Yusuke Kozaki (NO MORE HEROES, Fire Emblem series), a thrilling neo-noir detective adventure is about to unfold.
One rainy night in November, a woman’s body is found at an abandoned theme park, mounted on a merry-go-round horse. She had been stabbed repeatedly, and her left eye was gouged out. Kaname Date of the Metropolitan Police Department arrives on the scene. He recognizes the woman. Suddenly, he hears a noise from inside the merry-go-round. He breaks into the merry-go-round’s central column to find a young girl. And in her hands, she grips a bloody ice pick.
