Published in 1764 the first Gothic Horror novel was The Castle of Otranto; written by Horace Walpole this book mixes medieval and modern elements to offer one of the best works of British literature. Due to its extremely huge popularity; thanks to it a new literary genre came out from the darkness, with many authors who contributed to making it even more known among the masses. Legendary writers such as Ann Radcliffe, Bram Stoker, Edgar Allan Poe, and Robert Louis Stevenson were inspired by that opus, and thanks to it dozens of masterpieces like Dracula, Strange Case of Dr. Jekill and Mr. Hyde, The Mysteries of Udolpho, and many others conquered the souls of hundreds-thousands of people not only in Great Britain but all around the world.
But, how should be a proper Gothic Horror novel? You must mix real and supernatural elements equally, adding a pinch of secret passages & clanging trapdoors, a brave hero with someone to save, and find the best location ever (better if it is a real one). Once all the ingredients are ready, cook over hellish heat for a few minutes, and serve warm; if you did it well, many people will enjoy the recipe! During the centuries a lot of people embarked in this genre, not only using pen and paper, but also exploiting needle and thread, film, musical notes, and last but not least binary code. If you are a gothic fan; you surely played with Vampire: The Masquerade, Dark Souls, and Castlevania games.
The latter, in particular, is the best example of how a gothic game should be; indeed it includes all the elements of classic literature giving it a brand new approach!
The first Castlevania (or Akumajō Dracula) episode has been released in 1986 for the Famicom Disk System. Producer, writer, creative director, and much more; he’s one of the most important personalities of the industry; he took all the gothic horror cornerstones and adding some contemporary elements created something legendary… Luckily for us, after a quite long silent period; Igarashi-san has returned stronger than ever with Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night for PS4, XB1, and NS!
