Hattori Hanzō, Leonardo, Naruto, and Batman…do you know what all of these pop-icons have in common? Exactly, they’re ninja!
Formed by the two kanji characters, 忍 (stealth) and 者 (person); in western countries, it is commonly translated as shadow warrior. Organized in clans; the monst ancient record about them dates back to around to the 6^th century when the semi-legendary Prince Shōtoku hired some of them for espionage activities.
Very different from Samurai noble-caste which conduct and lifestyle was based on honor; normally ninja came from poor rural families, and they achieved their goals through trickery, deception, and any other possible mean. Trained in 18 deadly techniques: seishin-teki kyōkyō (spiritual refinement), taijutsu (unarmed combat), ninja-ken (sword fighting), bōjutsu (stick and staff fighting), shurikenjutsu (throwing blades), sōjutsu (spear fighting), naginatajutsu (naginata fighting), kusarigamajutsu (chain and sickle weaponry), kayakujutsu (fire and explosives), hensōjutsu (disguise and impersonation), shinobi-iri (stealth and entering methods), bajutsu (horsemanship), sui-ren (water training), bōryaku (military strategy), chōhō (espionage and spying), intonjutsu (escape and concealment), tenmon (meteorology), and chimon (geography); each warrior have to master all of them to the perfection in order to be ready to face any snag…even the most dangerous one!
Very practical, ninja armies don’t make gender-differences; indeed, if at the first place of the most popular shadow warriors we can find Hattori Hanzō, it’s not surprising that at the second one we find a woman: Mochizuki Chiyome, who worked for the feudal lord Takeda Shingen.

Due to their charm; many novels, movies, anime, and videogames have been dedicated to them. Among thousands of great opuses is a must to mention The Dagger of Kamui, Ninja Scroll, Science Ninja Team Gatchaman, Shinobi, Tenchu, and The Ninja Warriors. Originally released by Taito in 1987; The Ninja Warriors is a futuristic side-scrolling beat’em up game in which the player controlling two androids known as Kunoichi and Ninja, must put an end to the harsh tyranny of Banglar, the self-proclaimed president of U.S.A. Played extensively everywhere; this game got a huge boost of popularity thanks to the home-system ports that crowned the two protagonists as the “best video game ninjas”. In 1994 the second episode has been developed by Natsume exclusively for Super NES, and even this one received many positive reviews which praised its graphics, and gameplay elements. After this, everything seemed to stay still…but it was just a long break.
