Lost in the mists of time, the origin of the fantasy genre takes us back to the golden age when powerful gods and extraordinary heroes walked on Earth. Mythical figures such as Heracles, Gilgamesh or Yamato Takeru, revealed the deepest fears of humankind, and with their deeds, they helped us to face and defeat them.
Through the millennia, many opuses introduced even more strong & brave personalities who fought supernatural beings for the sake of hopeless people; maybe everyone remembers that Beowulf (the most ancient surviving English epic tale) challenged a very big quantity of monsters, witches, and dragons before be crowned king of the Geats.
Even the Bard of Avon (a.k.a. William Shakespeare) wrote dramas in which fantasy elements were prominent; one of them all deserve particular attention: A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Set in the world of fairies; this comedy links four stories that occur during the wedding of Theseus the Greek hero founder of Athens, and the extremely beautiful Amazon queen, Hippolyta. During that full-moon night, many fantastic characters including Puck, Oberon, and Titania attend the event making a lot of troubles to all the guests…but as Puck says at the end of the play maybe all it was only a dream.
Of course, stories of adventurers, kings, bandits, and monsters have reached the peak of popularity with two opuses that revolutionized the tradition of the whole genre, and become two cornerstones for the contemporary fantasy; The Lord of the Rings and Dungeon & Dragons!
