Another World, Another Time… In the Age of Wonder. A thousand years ago, this land was green and good, until the Crystal cracked. For a single piece was lost; a shard of the Crystal. Then strife began, and two new races appeared: the cruel Skeksis… the gentle Mystics.

This is the intro of one of the most beautiful movies of the 80s: Dark Crystal!
Directed by Jim Henson and Frank Oz; this is the first full-length movie without real people on screen ever released. Set on the distant planet Thra; a big celestial body illuminated by three suns and famous to be also the original home planet of two populations, the Podlings & the Gelflings.
While the previous are simple-minded rural people who called themselves as apopiapoiopidiappididiapipob (master gardeners who live in bulging plants), the latter are peaceful but proud beings divided into seven clans: the Dousan, the Drenchen, the Grottan, the Sifa, the Spriton, the Stonewood, and the Vapra. Unfortunately during the Age of Division, all of them have been enslaved by a new race known as Skeksis who exploited the power of the Crystal to such an extent, that it has begun to release a mephitic killing-all vapor who the later chronicles have nicknamed Darkening; growing day by day, this pure, raw power emanated by the Crystal blighted everything it touched. To prevent the destruction of Thra; Jen and Kira, two brave Gelflings traveled far and wide across the lands to restore the ancient power of the Crystal, and eventually oust the  Skeksis from their throne.
This cult-movie became a planetary success very fast; winning several prestigious prizes such as the Saturn Award for Best Fantasy Film, and the Grand Prize at the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival. But you know, even the most impactful global successes could be forgotten as the decades go by, but this is not the case of The Dark Crystal; the heritage of such amazing story reached also the new generations appearing in a large number of different opuses including novels, comics, and video games!

The very first interactive adventure starring the Gelflings was The Dark Crystal; this innovative first-person text adventure game has been released in 1982 for Apple II computers and DOS 3.3. Following faithfully the events occurred in the movie; the player impersonated Jen in his struggle to save Thra from the spread of the Darkening, the only way to do it is to replace the missing shard inside the Crystal. Following the success of this high-quality title; two years later Sierra developed another game destined to a younger audience: the Gelfling Adventure for Apple II machines. This nothing but a simplified edition of the first game featuring easier puzzles, and more easy-to-understand menus.
