Zatoichi, Rurouni Kenshin, and Goemon Ishikawa XIII are only some of the greatest warriors, but many other ones starred in countless manga, anime, and video games. For example, titles like Samurai Shodown, Sengoku Basara or Samurai Warriors presented this warrior caste in a very epic way; turning all of them as legendary superheroes equipped with almost supernatural powers, but in the crowded gaming world there’s a specific series who portrays samurai in a historically faithful way, its name is Way of the Samurai!
Set between the 15th century and the 19th century; the first chapter appeared in 2002 for PlayStation 2. Set in the 11th year of Meiji Era (1878), this adventure game sees a ronin called Kenji experience the deep social revolution implemented by Emperor Meiji that will drive Japan into the modern era. Starting from the remote village of Rokkotsu Pass, Kenji witnesses many big changes including the first railway system, and a proto-industrial iron foundry. This mix of previously unknown innovations and feudal past is a little bit confusing not only for him, but also for all the inhabitants of this locality, and this generates conflicts between clans to get more richness and prestige.
Showing the life of a person in a so faithfully, since the first chapter the players can choose between many destinies for the main character; the Choose Your Own Adventure feature allow us to experience multi-branched stories in which many decisions must be taken, each one affects the whole story enormously, and for example, we can decide to protect to hopeless villagers from the attacks of bands of outlaws or on the contrary ignore their requests, and continue the wandering life of a rōnin. Every episode of the series has been praised globally for its stories, side-activities, customization systems, and multiple endings that provide a radical experience like any other one.
