Wrote by Baroness Orczy and published in 1905, the historical-fiction novel The Scarlet Pimpernel can be considered the archetype of the superhero genre.
The story takes place in 1792 France, at the beginning of the French Revolution; Sir Percy Blakeney is an English baronet who using the secret identity of the scarlet pimpernel to rescue all the people who have been sentenced to the guillotine. Equipped with a formidable sword technique, and extreme agility, he joins the forces with a band of allies known as the League of the Scarlet Pimpernel, and together live exceptional adventures in the France of 18^th Century. Due to its incredible success; generations of artists have been inspired by these deeds to create some of the greatest masked superheroes of all time such as Zorro, The Shadow, Phantom, and Batman.
But even if apparently they are only made for fun, actually they reflect our existence: our fears, hopes, aspirations, and histories are contained in few dozens of pages that every week reach the houses of millions of people worldwide. Being always with us, they tell who we are much better than any sociologist in some cases, and one of the most interesting contemporary superheroes series comes from the Land of the Rising Sun, and its title is My Hero Academia!
