In the Land of the Rising Sun, the pioneer of RPG videogames is Koei; the 1982’s  Underground Exploration for NEC PC-8801, is globally considered as the first role-playing game ever appeared in Japan.
But, as you maybe already know; the golden decade of JRPG started with Famicom and two series that are extremely popular even today… Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy.

While both of them belong to the traditional RPG field; through the years developers tried to offer something new to appeal to a larger number of players both at home and abroad. For example, Star Cruiser published by Arsys Software for PC-88 is the perfect exponent of the unique Japanese creativity. Mixing a compelling sci-fi story with FPS gameplay mechanics; this 1988 jewel won a lot of awards becoming really popular all around the world (also thanks to the port for Sega Mega Drive in 1990).
