Published in 1667, the Paradise Lost is one of the most renowned poems of world literature; composed by the English poet John Milton, this opus tells describes in blank verses the fall of humankind starting from the biblical story of Adam and Eve, and their subsequent expulsion from the Garden of the Eden.
Providing an allegory of human existence in this world; Paradise Lost inspired thousands of artists that through the centuries created their own version of this universally beloved work.

Just to name a few, thanks to it now we may enjoy works like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, Kamen Rider 555: Paradise Lost or Darksiders’ video game series; but they are not the only ones, our world is full of (more or less) veiled references about it not only in video games, literature or films, but also in music, visual arts, architecture, animation, and many other media.

Created by Hideki Kamiya, and originally released for PlayStation 2 in 2001; Devil May Cry is an action hack and slash series deeply indebted to two actual classics of world’ literature. In fact, while the setting is inspired by Paradise Lost, the characters are a lovely homage to Dante Alighieri’s Divine Comedy: Dante; Virgil (Vergil); Beatrice Portinari (Trish); Saint Lucy (Lucia); Satan (Trismagia); the Minotaur (Furiataurus); Geryon; Cerberus, and many other minor demons from the nine circles. Since the first installment, it has received hundreds of positive reviews and an overwhelming global success.

Due to this divine reception, the key characters have been also appeared in light novels, anime, and even stage plays; in addition, they’ve been included in other titles including Shin Megami Tensei III: Nocturne, Viewtiful Joe & Project X Zone.
