Spider-Man… turning 60 hasn’t slowed you down one bit!
Captain America, Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Black Panther, Thor, the Guardians of the Galaxy, and obviously Spider-Man; with comics before and the movies now, Marvel reshaped the mythical figures of gods & heroes with brand new generations of characters that don’t look out of place in ancient texts written by Homer, Ovid, or Snorri Sturluson.
Thanks to iconic characters, and a non-stopping expanding multiverse; reading or watching them we are free to travel among hundreds of worlds without problems to live unforgettable adventures. Obviously the concept of “multiverse” is not an original creation of Timely Publications (the first name of Marvel), but we can find it in very ancient texts such as the Hindu Puranas or in the One Thousand and One Nights; anyway, we’re here to discuss about comics, and the first one that included this charming idea was “Flash of Two Worlds”. Published in 1961, in this story Barry Allen meets Jason “Jay” Peter Garrick – the Golden Age Flash – giving birth not only to a new way to insert lost characters but also to a new kind of narration that fascinates billions of people on Earth 616.
In our reality, one of the greatest superheroes is without any doubt the legendary friendly neighborhood Spider-Man!
Appeared in August 1962 on the pages of Amazing Fantasy #15; Steve Ditko and Stan Lee presented him with these words: “Like costume heroes? Confidentially, we in the comic mag business refer to them as “long underwear characters”! And, as you know, they’re a dime a dozen! But, we think you may find our Spiderman just a bit…different!“
…Meanwhile in another universe…
Very different from all the other heroes that appeared in comic books before; for more than half a century, Spider-Man is worldwide renowned as a global cultural icon which different versions of him in different countries. For example in Japan during the late 70s, Toei and Marvel produced a 41 episodes tokusatsu series in which one night the motorcycle racer Takuya Yamashiro sees a spaceship called Marveller. Due to this a hostile alien race known as Iron Cross Army started to attack the Earth. Only Takuya, infused with the powers of Planet Spider inhabitants could change himself into the powerful Supaidāman (スパイダーマン).
Using hi-tech gadgets and piloting the 60 meters tall mecha Leopardon, he’s the last hope for the survival of humankind. Another special Spider-Man can be found in India. The young boy Pavitr Prabhakar moves from his small village to Mumbai. There he lives with uncle Bhim and aunt Maya, unfortunately, at school, he’s daily chased by bullies. But thanks to a fortuitous encounter with an old yogi; Pavitr acquires the powers of a spider, in order to fight all the evil that threatens the world.
In all these years many other Spider-Men for many alternative worlds saved their realities from common and super-dangerous villains; this is why we’re here to celebrate his 60th anniversary, and what’s the best way to do it if not with a vast selection of Spectacular movies, Superior toys, and Amazing statues?
