Spy x Family – Whatever happens, we’re a family!
Today, we go back to the roaring 1920s; that was an era of great changes, an era of “pleasure seeking, entertainment, and decadence”. This was real not only in Europe and America but also in Japan where modernism reflected a total change in everyday lifestyles. Soon after the big Kanto earthquake in 1923, Tokyo has been rebuilt entirely laying the foundation of the nowadays megalopolis; the reconstruction wasn’t only physical but also cultural new kinds of trends appeared starting from 1924 when the essay entitled “The Appearance of Modern Girls” has been released.
The so-called moga & mobo (Modern Girls & Modern Boys) break away from the traditional values of the past, to live a new life made of airplanes, automobiles, movies, radio, sports, jazz, and detective stories. Initially seen as a sort of avant-garde; in each of these tales and novels, we may find many other sub-genres such as Futurism, Expressionism, Surrealism, Dadaism, etc. Authors like Edogawa Ranpo, Seichō Matsumoto, and Hase Seishū bring detective stories to the highest level making them one of the most popular literary genres. Inspiring series like Tesla Note, Agent Aika, and Night Raid 1931; we can consider them the natural evolution of what started as a highly criticized subject more than 100 years ago…Charmed by all these great stories; the mangaka Tatsuya Endo gives the detective stories a huge boost thanks to his Spy × Family series!
Started in 2019 on the pages of Shōnen Jump+ magazine; mixes greatly fantastic & mystery aspects in a series too good to pass up. Starring Loid Forger, an undercover spy known as Twilight, in Spy × Family all start with the beginning of his new mission in which he must marry and have an heir. The reason is simple, Loid has to infiltrate a private school, but the world is always full of BIG surprises, and this one is not an exception!
In fact, Twilight is not the only one that’s keeping secrets… his wife Yor is not -only- a clerk at Berlint City Hall, but she’s an assassin codenamed Thorn Princess; while the little, adorable Anya is nothing but a telepath which powers are the results of various experiments conducted by a mysterious organization. As a family, these three anti-heroes join their forces to accomplish a vast range of missions to keep the world a very safe place. Along 11 story arcs, this wonderful team experience so many situations that in comparison James Bond seems a real rookie. But in a world full of lies, can they stay true to their principles and accomplish their missions?
This is so exciting! Waku Waku!
Bringing the spy action genre to new heights, Spy × Family is very successful; considered the “No. 1 Popular Web Comic of 2019,” and the “No. 1 Popular Shonen Jump+ Work, every volume sold hundreds of thousands if not millions of copies in very few days. Thanks to its quality both in story and design, it is one of the nominated titles for the Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards 2022, the most important award in the comic industry.
And it is in good company… with opuses of the caliber of Chainsaw Man, Robo Sapiens: Tales of Tomorrow, Kaiju No. 8, Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead, and Lovesickness: Junji Ito Story Collection; let’s discover if the Forger Family will add the next Best U.S. Edition of International Material—Asia award to their trophy gallery; all will be revealed on next July at San Diego International Comic-Con.
