description

After the death of the governor, our returning hero Yu Shu Lien (Michelle Yeoh) is ambushed while trying to reach Peking. After fending off the attackers, it becomes obvious that they are after the same thing as her: the sword Green Destiny, the object of desire for several nefarious parties. This sets off events in which the mysterious young woman Snow Vase, the handsome thief Wei Fang, the martial artist Silent Wolf (Donnie Yen!) and the not-so-subtly named Hades (Jason Scott Lee) get involved among others. And each of them has an agenda that is still to be revealed, connecting all of them to one another and the sword. One question remains: who will stand with whom in the epic showdown?

This movie is not really in the same vein as Ang Lee's original masterpiece. It feels much more like it's straight out of the Tsui Hark school of fantasy flicks with an illustrious group of heroes called “Silent Wolf”, “Flying Blade of Shantung”, “Thunder Fist Chan”, “Silver Dart Shi” and “Turtle Ma”. The director is most-of-the-time fight choreographer Yuen Woo-Ping and he obviously filmed a nostalgic throwback to old school wire-fu flicks like he worked on during the 70s/80s with Hark.

So if you expect artful melodrama like in the predecessor, you will be looking in vain. But if you grew up with this style-over-substance fun cinema, you will feel right at home.
