description

Hong Kong, 1960. A sweltering hot summer. York (Leslie Cheung), an amoral disillusioned and cruel young man is kept in luxury by his foster mother, a retired courtesan, who gives him everything but the one thing he needs to know - the identity of his natural mother. A self-obsessed man, desperately seeking his true identity, York plays carelessly with his lovers, a lonely submissive bargirl (Maggie Cheung) and a beautiful club hostess/dancer (Carina Lau) and his friends, before leaving them all for the Philippines in search of the truth that has been denied, and may ultimately destory him.

You Will Be Disappointed
I love this movie. I've watched it at least 50 times on VHS, LD and DVD. When I knew this was being remastered and released on Blu-ray, I immediately ordered it with great anticipation of re-watching this again in 1080p. To everyone who felt the same - don't. Received my copy and the minute I put it in, I was disappointed. Visuals are grainy and soft. At best, it looks like an upscaled version from a DVD. If you just want to add a Blu-ray version of this movie to your collection, go ahead. But if you are hoping for a better visual - stop. You ain't getting it on this release.

The first movie in a trilogy that actualy doesn´t exist.
Confused? You should be, because this is actualy a bit dificult to explain. Days of Being Wild is the unnoficialy first chapter of a story that spans over two other movies, In The Mood For Love and 2046.
The weird thing about the story, is that for you to fully apreciate it, you have to go back to two of the movies at least twice.
Days of Being Wild tells the first part of the story, but if you want to apreciate this first movie as it should be, i sugest you first buy In The Mood For Love, (wich is the second part), and then get 2046, (the third and final one). Sounds weird ? It is, but to me this is the order in wich this story has to be seen. After you see 2046 for the first time, you´ll miss plenty of details because you still haven´t seen this first one. So, then, buy this Days of Being Wild, watch it and suddenly the next time you´ll watch 2046 again you´ll find out that it may look like an entirely new movie because after you see Days of Being Wild suddenly lots of details you didn´t noticed in 2046 will give it an entire new dimension. And the same goes for In the Mood For Love, wich in my opinion you should watch first.
And why see the chapters of this story in such a strange order ? Because the magic in this story is not in the sequence, but in discovering entirely a new film the second time you see, after going back to its origins once you see the middle and the ending. Weird, hein? Believe me, you´ll apreciate this story more that way, because the beauty and poetry in this story is in the way you find out things about the characters and fill that jigsaw puzzle in your mind wich is full of blank spots the first time you see any of the 3 movies and try to understand what they mean.
It all will be clear, after you get this dvd here Days of Being Wild. But first watch \"part 2\" and \"3\", In the Mood For Love and 2046. You´ll fully understand why then and all this i´m writing here wont sound so crazy.

As for this dvd, well, it may not be the best copy i ever saw in a disc, but there´s nothing particulary wrong about it, so i recomend you get this if you loved ITMFL and 2046 and you want to discover the roots of the story and the past of the characters.

Just a final not to once again compliment Play-Asia for another excelent service. I´m on the other side of the world (Portugal/Europe) and i got my disc in about 4 days after it was shipped and i didn´t even used any special method of transportation. Just the regular \"air bubble\" option.

As for the movie 6 out of 10 if you haven´t seen ITMFL and 2046. BUT... 10 out of 10 if you already seen those.
Believe me after you watch this then, you´ll discover new movies in the other ones you thought you already seen.

Now this is what i call a totaly weird way of telling a story in Cinema. I don´t know if Wong-Kar-Wai is nuts or a genius !
Brilliant stuff anyway.
