Mostly hit-or-miss, but the good stuff is GOOD!
This is by far the most cinematic soundtrack in the Final Fantasy franchise - as well as the most diverse, for better or worse. It contains both atmospheric cinematic tracks, more classical sounding compositions with probably the series's most complicated harmonies, and tracks with a more typical video game sound - I strongly doubt anyone will enjoy all three.
I can't stress enough how much I enjoy the battle tracks (Boss Battle, the final battle, Clash of Swords, Eidolon battle etc.), and the music for FMVs, but the location and dungeon ambient tracks (Rabanastre, Dalmasca Estersand, Bhujerba) just don't do it for me. I've never really appreciated the pop ballads during the end credits for FF games, and Kiss Me Good-bye is no exception - although it may well be the best sung ballad so far in the series. Let's not ignore skillful performances because it makes us say good things about things we don't like.
Compared to Sakimoto's other works, I would argue that Breath of Fire V is a stronger soundtrack. Sadly, it's a bit harder to find. Still, the parts of this soundtrack that I like just knock it out of the park! It's difficult to recommend this soundtrack unconditionally - just know that you'll get a wide range of musical styles, clothed in reasonably accurate symphonic orchestra sound sampling. It actually seems to have a fairly good balance between them, too.
