Global Destruction for Your Entertainment - Independence Day: Resurgence.

20 years ago, Independence Day heralded in the era of the spectacle heavy block buster. Budgets were recalculated, box office expectations raised and medium sized movies scratched. “Bigger, louder, better” became the mantra of Hollywood executives and everyone was treated with cinema gems like Armageddon, Deep Impact, 2012 and ultimately Michael Bay. And it made Will Smith an A-list actor.
It's arguable whether those were disaster movies or movie disasters, but they sure made tons of money. And now, we're being treated seconds! Independence Day: Resurgence picks up 20 years after the POTUS has saved the world with most of the original cast returning. Obviously absent is only Will Smith whose last sci-fi movie After Earth made him keep his distance from the genre for now.
Additionally, we have a second generation of maverick pilots who are prepared to defend earth from impending alien invasions. Such as the one that is just arriving. Only this time, their mothership is the size of a continent with a mass so dense, it creates its own gravity.
If you are looking for a nuanced depiction of how humans deal with loss and rise beyond themselves by overcoming seemingly insurmountable obstacles, try out The Shallows. But if you want to see how a part of the Asian landmass is being sucked up and thrown at London, you are with the right movie!
