description

Arc System Work's signature cel shaded anime fighter is back in this upgraded release based on Japanese arcade machine roots; not only does Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- feature graphical upgrades and gameplay tweaks based on fan feedback, there are now 20+ fighters in the roster as well as modes galore! LET'S ROCK...AGAIN!?

At 60 frames per second, there's been a lot of polish done on the graphical aspect of game that already looks beautiful. For those new to Guilty Gear, one of the most outstanding aspects is how the game transitions between on-screen mayhem to it's finishing move cutscenes, and everything inbetween.

For modes, there's the regular Story Mode and Episode mode - the latter features the story told from teh arcade version of the game; for beginners there's tutorial and practice modes and M.O.M. mode, a hardcore challenge for returning veterans. However, while this is all single player, the meat in Guilty Gear is definitely in it's online VS offering, and this is where it gets interesting.

Rare for console games, Guilty Gear Xrd -REVELATOR- has PS4/PS3 system compatible battles, and there is a new lobby where players can setup matches, spectate, and even train while waiting for your match. What makes this mode stand out is that the lobby mode is set up like an arcade with cabinet machines, bringing in a nice sense of community for fighting fans to gather and duke it out. As well, in this lobby, there's even a fishing pond; gamers can use this mechanic to acquire custom parts and emotes for their avatar, or even new player colors!

Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator (PS3 version)
Guilty Gear Xrd - Revelator is a solid fighting game containing a wide variety of characters. They range from characters with solid neutral and pressure tools like Sin and Johnny, to Okizeme monsters like Millia and Raven.

The initial tutorial is a nice way to teach new players the basics, but as with any fighting game there's more technology under the hood and thankfully they cover this as well. Guilty Gear Xrd - Revelator gives players tools to better understand the mechanics and character matchups through mission mode, or to get an idea of a character’s playstyle and damage through combos.

The game is very momentum oriented and encourages forward movement through increased meter gain and rewarding setups off of a hard knock down. It also promotes active defense through instant blocking and dead angles to try and shift the momentum in your favor. It always feels like both players have something to do and a chance to get back in, while at the same time rewarding players who can maintain momentum with more opportunities to close out the round, which I find pretty satisfying.

Graphical differences between PS3 and PS4 / Arcade version are noticeable, notably the lack of additional lighting effects on fireballs (in higher fidelity versions of the game, these fireballs have their own light source), and some effects are toned down, (Jam's Asanagi buff special, and the dynamic shadow effects of Central Organ Tower based on altitude). On PS3 there is some noticeable frame drop in high density stages when set to "Graphics Priority", however this may be TV dependent. This can be remedied by setting is to "Processing Priority" instead, though you lose some graphical fidelity like the sharpness of models.

[Please note this only applies to the PS3 version of the game, if I'm incorrect please let me and other people know]

Story is split into a watch-only movie, as well as a playable arcade mode which gives context to the main story for each character released before Jam (I think, as of 28 June 2016). It is fairly enjoyable, however having the main story component having no play-ability may not be for everyone.

Overall, a very good fighting game with plenty to offer for veteran fighting game players, and tools to help newer players as well. The PS4 version is way to go however, as the PS3 version is missing some of the graphical upgrades to the previous game. Guilty Gear Xrd - Revelator is a solid entry to the Arc System Works catalog regardless of which version you choose.

Worth Buying!
Great graphics, great animation, great gameplay! There's also a lot of improvement from the previous Xrd -SIGN-. It has better online play setup and better online lobby and rooms. And there are new features – new characters, new effects (character rendering, clash, special KO bg, etc.), new skills – just to name a few. Even if you don't play Guilty Gear you get your money's worth just with the great graphics and story mode movie. Can't go wrong in buying this – definitely recommended.

Fantastic Fighting game
I just received my copy of Guilty Gear Xrd Revelator yesterday and it's already become one of my favorite fighters of all time. It's fast paced, rockin', and really really enjoyable. Guilty Gear is back for a new generation.
