When I first heard of Guin Saga, I wasn't particularly intrigued by the lead character - a hero having the head of a leopard and the body of Arnold Schwarzenegger truly sounded like a bizzare combination. Because I'm fond of epic fantasies like 12 Kingdoms and Moribito, I gave it a try. I'm also a huge fan of Nobuo Uematsu's Final Fantasy music and this factor probably persuaded me the most.

The music has a medieval feel to it and Uematsu seems to have opt for a subtle and even restrained approach. Strings feature more prominently than brass and as a result there are few bombastic or rousing pieces that resemble for example the orchestral version of FF VIII's Don't Be Afraid or FF XIV's Navigator's Glory Theme of Limsa Lominsa. The closest to the level of FF grandeur is probably Guin Opening (Track 1 on Disc 1) and Eiyu (Track 12 on Disc 2).

I have not watched the complete series, so I could not get a feel for some of the pieces without the visuals. For the time being, I'll give it 3 stars. It's unfortunate that Kanon's theme song has not been included. There is an impressive booklet that features Uematsu's commentary for each track and an interview - all in Japanese though.
