The two actors play lovers, whose tumultuous relationship is a never-ending process of breaking up and making up. The pair journeys to Buenos Aires to start over, but the cycle begins anew, each alternately completing and depleting the other, until the relationship can only disintegrate beneath their all-consuming passions. Wong Kar Wai brings a lurid directorial style to Happy Together that's exciting and emotionally powerful. Aided and abetted by cinematographer Christopher Doyle, Happy Together leaps from the screen in an impressive blend of rich, passionate colors that bleed and fade into one another just like the two bickering lovers. Co-starring Chang Chen, Happy Together was critically acclaimed upon release, and earned Wong Kar Wai a Best Director prize at the Cannes Film Festival.
