description says:

INUGAMI, much like MEMENTO MORI, fails as a horror movie but succeeds as a drama filled with cultural interest. A mystical soap opera with wild dog gods, family secrets, incest, and more!
--- Legend dictates that the Bonomiya women are cursed to guard the urns which house the spirits of the Inugami, the wild dog gods. Forty-something-year-old Miki Bonomiya, leads a spinster’s lonely life as a traditional paper maker in a remote mountain village. When Miki begins a love affair with the handsome new school teacher Akira, her new youthful appearance stirs rumours and family problems. When unexpected tragedy strikes, suspicion and strange events upset the calm community. An eerie fog cloaks the village, but it can no longer hide the secrets of Miki’s past. --- Many of you have no doubt seen an episode of THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL before and those of you who haven’t definitely know about it. Well INUGAMI is pretty much a carbon copy soap opera set in a rural village with mystical wild dogs and actual decent acting. While this is actually supposed to be a horror movie, the horror elements are so small that you might even notice them so it’s best to go into this movie expecting a drama. The storyline, while slow in places, is generally interesting and finding out about the character’s pasts when there is no air of mystery about it makes for some surprising soap opera twists. The main draw of this film would have to be the amazing shots of rural villages and the Japanese landscape and the cinematography is beautiful. If you’ve ever had any interest in olden-day Japan or the way people are still into those customs, you have to check this out because it’s probably just what you’re looking for. Like I said, the acting in INUGAMI puts soap operas to shame, not that it’s saying much mind you, and most of the actors are above average. The best actor is Yuki Amami (ALIVE) as Miki. She is head over heels better than the rest and, for a young lady, can portray a 40+ year old very well while she’s only half that age. Part ghost story, part rural drama, part soap opera, part erotic movie (a very minor part so don’t get excited). INUGAMI totally bombs out on the horror scale of things but thankfully holds up as an amusing and interesting rural drama. Give it a go if you want to see how rural villages live their lives and what the beautiful landscape looks like. -Adam Kitano
