Poetic & Picturesque
Feted Hong Kong singer-songwriter Ivana Wong delivers a sophomore album with substance, proving to all and sundry that she is no flash in the pan. Compared to her more experimental 2005 debut, I Love My Name, Poetic & Picturesque is less quirky and grounded mostly by dreamy pop and willowy ballads. Some say Wong (who found fame after her 2004 debut album with Jacky Cheung, I Am Really Hurt) sounds increasingly like Faye Wong circa early 1990s, and even allude to her selling out to please the crowd with a more radio-friendly sound. That would be neither fair nor accurate. Wong\'s new songs like Poetic, Paris Has No Ferris Wheel and ust Qualify To Hate still have a surreal, whimsical quality about them which is definitely not cookie-cuuter or compromising.
