It is the present day and Matsuko's nephew, Sho, is cleaning out his dead aunt's filthy apartment. Through a series of encounters, he gradually learns of his aunt's checkered life. In the early 1970s, Matsuko loses her teaching job and the love of her family members when she imprudently assumes the blame for a theft by one of her favorite pupils, Ryu. Alone and adrift in the world, Matsuko begins hooking up with any man who will return her affections even if it is accompanied by physical abuse. With each man, she is convinced she's found true happiness only to see each man abandon her. Matsuko begins to fall apart, never fully realizing the extent to which those in her life have loved her.

"Memories of Matsuko" is an eye-popping, garish, comic, and deeply affecting vision of a woman's descent into madness.

MEMORIES OF MATSUKO is a beautiful, funny, emotional and sometimes sad film, with amazing visuals and flawless acting all around

It\'s described by the director (who also did KAMIKAZE GIRLS) as a fairy tale tragedy. It is that and so much more.

It\'s unforgettable, and strongly recommended
