Must-Buy Reissue - pity no bonus tracks
I have been a huge Yamamoto Tatsuhiko fan since the early 1980s and have been very frustrated by the very badly conceived series of greatest hits his former record companies have put out. These compilations have weird inclusions and unforgivable omissions. So I was so pleased when Toshiba-EMI has decided to re-issue his earlier albums - MUSIC is one of the best ones (the other is Mediterranee)
It is really a pity that Toshiba-EMI did not think it worthwhile to include bonus tracks from Yamamoto's extensive catalogue in the re-issues - definitely a disappointment
MUSIC is a standout from Yamamoto's catalogue in that it is the first album that competently showcases his great song-writing and his penchant for fusion - not too cheesily adult-contemporary but really a very loungy, chillout kind of vibe and groove. Indeed, this album is a precursor to the very misrepresented chill-out genre that is flooding the market these days.
There are tracks in this album that skirt dangerously close to elevator muzak (Track 8 is a prime example) but the rest is fantastic. Personal faves are tracks 1, 2, 5, 6, 7, 10.
Definitely worth a listen.
