To live nearer to their mother, who is recuperating from an illness in a hospital, little Mei and her elder sister Satsuki are moving with their father to a house in the country. Playing in the yard one day, Mei spots a tiny creature and follows it into the hollow of a huge tree. There she discovers Totoro, a giant, furry creature the size of a small house, fast asleep. Totoro and his friends can't be seen by adults, but only by the children who love them. Mei and Satsuki fly with Totoro on a warm summer night, plant a giant tree that grows in minutes and sit high in its branches. The girls also call on Totoro for help when they are in trouble.
I just got the Blu-ray in of Only Yesterday (Hong Kong) and boy oh boy what a film. I'm not going to go into extensive details about the film, because I'm not that much of a wordsmith and wouldn't be able to convey the emotional impact of this movie as well as others have. If you are looking at the film because you are searching for every Studio Ghibli movie to watch, well it's vastly different than any of their other films. This movie isn't really for kids. Not because of outragoues content, but because of the mature, slow, thought-provoking nature of the subject matter. So just don't go in expecting a fantastical adventure. But by all means check this film out.
The Hong Kong Blu-Ray looks fantastic, sounds great, english subtitles are fine, and it's half the price of the Japanese Blu-Ray so I highly recommend ordering this version of the Blu-Ray if you are looking to purchase this film. And don't worry, the chances of this coming out in North America are so so low, so you don't have to worry about a licensed American version coming out.
As always, the blu ray transferred was done perfectly, great sound , colourful and beautiful picture quality. Story wise, it's quite touching for me, which is telling a girl's life, who patiently await for his father return, who serve as country sailor in the war. Between, something wonderful happen in her life which she met a nice guy she loves, but things happen, I am not gonna spoil anything here, u just have find out yourself if you wanna know the ending. Well, I would say this is a great piece of work from Miyazaki junior, as it deliver the emotional charge whenever it should be. Enjoy it.....
One of my favourite Ghibli movies. The story is about a young witch growing up in an unfamiliar city. Thats it. No world in danger no bad guys which is what i love about this movie. A story doesn't need to be epic to be great! All you need is great characters which this movie has.
