Essential Gameboy Color Title
As the title of this game suggests, this IS the challenge version. This game can get to be quite difficult, even for a Panel de Pon veteran. This game starts off fairly easy giving you a chance to get good at it until it throws you into the intense levels where the game is unforgivably hard, even on the first stage.
The game works like this, you move your cursor around the screen switching blocks around horizontally with tyhe neighboring block, line 3 in a row, they disappear. Line 4 in a row, it counts as a combo and continue all the way until 10 block combo. If you clear blocks and then have another block fall in place to create a combo, it counts as a chain and gives you more points and larger garbage blocks to be sent to the other side (2 player only). In gym challenge mode, you perform chains to make your opponent's Pokemon lose energy. In intense mode, the enemies recover after raising the stack a certain number of times. In puzzle mode, there are several stages to really make you think, some requiring active chains to complete. There are unlockable characters that most of which are unlocked under gym challenge mode by performing certain requirements before completing a stage. I always made sure to unlock Pikachu first and use him the whole game. I like his sound effect more than anyone else's. As an extra, there is a mode called LINE CLEAR where you just keep getting rid of blocks and raising the stack until you get to some designated line to clear the level. I almost beat the whole game and all modes in 1 sitting, but got to intense mode and had to take a break.
Pokemon Panel de Pon (Pokemon Puzzle Challenge) is incredibly addicting and is probably one of those games that may turn gamers away because it has Pokemon in the name, but that is misleading. It is probably the best puzzle game on Gameboy next to Tetris. This game does not play on Super Gameboy or Super Gameboy 2, just put this in your Gameboy Player for Gamecube and you are set.
