description

Psikyo Collection Vol. 1 is heading to Nintendo Switch, squeezing four currently available eShop titles into one juicy bundle.
The four titles included are Strikers 1945, SOL Divide, Samurai Aces, and Gunbird, all of which are classic, arcade-style scrolling shooters. All four games were originally released in the '90s, each with their own slight twists and different sets of playable characters. While this collection seems to be pretty barebones and "limited", it's always nice to have a physical release of eShop-only games. especially if they are arcade classics.

Fantastic collection
Some games that never came out in English speaking regions and classics like gunbird that are crazy expensive on dreamcast are in this collection.

If you are a shooter fan picking this up for your switch is a no brain purchase.

A good compilation, but slightly lacking
There isn't much to be said about a compilation of arcade ports that have appeared on few older console systems already. The ports themselves are barebones, with some options thrown in there to tweak the system to your liking. You get what you see, which isn't a bad thing with arcade games. You can't go wrong with four classic shooting games.

The only Switch specific thing is a lacklustre gallery mode for each of the four titles, and that's pretty much it. All in-game text is remade as well, and looks like a slapped overlay that looks completely out of place within the titles. It looks jarring, to say the least.

If we're being completely honest, Psikyo collections Vol. 1 and 2 should have been one title, called Psikyo Shooting Collection with eight games. Game size would not have been an issue for the Switch game card.

Is there a reason to pick up it this particular collection if you already own e.g. Gunbird Collection for the PS2? Unless you want these games on the go, or simply want to support physical releases on the Switch or shooting games in general, or at a cheaper price than buying the titles separate from the online store, then no.

Gets an extra star for allowing vertical mode, something more Switch games should take advantage of.

4 Classic STGs for One Low Price
Psikyo made many of the best shooting games throughout their storied career. While they ceased operations in the early 2000's, their history lives on with this collection of high quality arcade shooters. If you are a fan of the genre, this collection, in addition to Volume 2 that's available for pre-order right now, are no brainer purchases.
