Horace Pinker (Mitch Pileggi) is a television repairman and a blood thirsty monster. His favourite activity is murder. His only pleasure: watching his victims suffer.Don Parker (Michael Murphy), a local police starts to investigate the identity of this serial killer in town. One night, Don's son, high school student Jonathan Parker (Peter Berg) sees Pinker murdering his family in his dreams. Soon he finds the nightmare comes true and that his mother, sister and brother are killed by Pinker.

In intense grief, Jonathan quickly guides his father to arrest the killer through his dreams. Pinker is trialed and sentenced to a death penalty in electric chair. Surprisingly, this doesn't kill him but the 200,000 volts he has absorbed make him invincible. He transforms into an evil spirit which can travel freely in and out of peoples bodies, forcing them to execute his bloody killing atrocities. Later, Pinker discovers that he can even deliver his will to TV audiences through television signals. He starts to manipulate a mass of people in town as his killing slaves through TV screens. Parker's girlfriend, Alison, becomes one of his many victims.

Determined to get revenge, Jonathan successfully transforms himself into pure energy. This way he can transport himself into TV programs to try and beat Pinker on his own turf.
