Master System Mentality with Modern day spin
This is a nice game to play through that has a fantastic Sega Master System colour palette and look. You might not even notice that it is a new game in a way. If you want a challenging game that channels a Contra gameplay style, give this a go.

NES Throwback Justice
Imagine if you will Contra with a double jump and instead of blasting guns your tossing shurikens. That's the gameplay formula of Tanuki Justice and it pulls it off almost flawlessly. Nice graphics design on the settings and enemy sets each level. I'd recommend it controls much better than your average platformer going for that nostalgic 1990 feel
