Item Description

Taking place on the same continent as the fan favorite Trails in the Sky offshoot of Nihon Falcom's storied The Legend of Heroes franchise, Trails of Cold Steel (Sen no Kiseki in Japanese) is the first in the series to tread Erebonian soil and explore the inner political conflicts of this oft-mentioned powerhouse nation in detail. With a standalone story that also delves into the expansive lore that has become synonymous with the series, players can enjoy school life and bond with fellow students to earn new abilities in battle, take advantage of speedy, tactical turn-based combat with the newly-developed "ARCUS" system, and take part in dramatic events that stand to shift the balance of power between Erebonia's feuding nobility and commoners.

Excellent RPG
First off, it's clear that the creators of this game are heavily influenced by a number of other classics. The influence of the Persona series is especially noticeable, but in general it's a mashup of some of the best parts of a variety of great games. As ambitious as that sounds, they execute on it *really* well and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish.

The individual characters (esp. Class 7 members) are interesting and the world building is very strong. Story pace is a bit slow, but this is largely because they're setting up everything for the sequel, and let me be clear that there's never a dull moment.

Combat is my favorite of any JRPG. Lots of tactical depth and interesting choices. Boss fights especially are a blast. I really like the improvements they made to the system over previous titles, such as streamlining the extra math out of Quartz and adding Tactical Link (or whatever they end up calling it in the English version).

Anyway, if you've ever enjoyed any kind of JRPG, you'll find a lot to like in this one.

Excellent as always
I've never played an Eiyuu Densetsu title that didn't amaze me, and this one is no exception.

Top notch combat as always. Other RPGs could stand to learn a thing or two here. Elegant design (especially favoring player choice over RNG) make combat easy to understand, but at the same time deep enough that you'll still be refining your approach thousands of battles in.

The "military academy" setting between missions is reminiscent of Persona 4, and has many elements in common (such as choosing which of your teammates to spend time with, so as to build "links" that benefit you in battle). The whole cast is likeable, and it's fun getting to know more about your team as you advance.

If you're proficient in Japanese and enjoy RPGs, I can't recommend this one enough. It's easily a top favorite for me. If your Japanese isn't so great, then keep an eye out for the English version coming later this year (as "Trails of Cold Steel"). XSEED did a phenomenal job with Sora No Kiseki, so I'm sure the Sen No Kiseki loc will be excellent as well.

Whichever version you choose, just make sure you don't miss out! =)
