Item Description

Set in the year 2013, Tokyo Metropolitan Police’s Special Vehicles Section 2 — the so-called “Patlabor” — has made some drastic changes to its labor forces due to the global recession. The name of the unit stems from a robot specifically designed for heavy industry work, called “Labor”, which opened up a new quality of crime, thus the “Patrol Labor” – Patlabor police unit was created.

15 years after the setting of the original Patlabor animated movie, the TMPD was forced to get rid of its former personnel, making space for the next generation of Labor pilots, crew and technicians who took the place of the original 2nd Special Vehicles Division, leaving only Shigeo Shiba (“Shige”), former second-in-command of the mechanics division, as a veteran.

The live action series consists of thirteen episodes (numbered 0-12) and is helmed by none other than the director of the original Patlabor anime, Mamoru Oshii. It is set as a sequel to the Patlabor series, specifically to the three animated movies, although a lot of plot ideas are recycled. In comparison to the movies, the show is much more of a comedy and parody of other works, such as the Kaiju and Real Robot genre, than a police sci-fi thriller.

The complete show is split into two DVD/Blu-Ray Boxsets but the story of Episode 12 will conclude with a feature-length “The Next Generation: Patlabor - The Movie”, also called “Tokyo War”.

Episode 0: THE GLORY OF SV2
Shigeo Shibathe oldest member of Special Vehicles Section 2 (SV2), gives a sums up the series' history so even newbies are up to date for what is to follow.

Episode 1: THE THIRD GENERATION IN ACTION
Having to spend their days in an endless “standby” mode due to technical repairs, the members of SV2 find ever more tedious annoyances to while away their time. But when they suddenly receive a distress signal, they have to show that when push comes to shove, they quit the nonsense and get professional. More or less.

Episode 2: REACTIVATE TYPE 98
The SV2 is still a thorn in the eye of the upper echelons of the police which hatch a plot to get it dissolved: whilst the 98 Ingram Labor is still unable to adequately stand, SV2 is commanded to participate in the reception of the Tokyo Metropolitan Police commissioner and fire a salute in his presence. It will take the combined efforts of mechanic teams and pilots to overcome this difficult situation, but will it be enough? And will they get along long enough?

Episode 3: AKIRA THE IRON FIST
During her off-time, Akira Izumino meets a mysterious old man at a game arcade. Shocked at being defeated by an old geezer, she starts a rigorous training program that causes her to lose the ability to distinguish between reality and fiction.
With the help of Yuma from Backup Team 1, she reaches a state of ultimate reflexes and speed. Now, she must face her newfound nemesis again, but will her skills alone be enough to be victorious ... over an old man in video games?

Episode 4: WILD DOG DAY AFTERNOON
On one of her runs to get food for the whole crew from their nearby convenience store, Akira stumbles straight into a hostage situation. Armed with a large amount of explosives and heavy machine guns, terrorists are holding the shop and its visitors under occupation. Of course, the rest of SV2 come to the rescue but looking at their track record, the question arises: will they cause more harm or more good?

Episode 5: GIANT MONSTER ON THE LOOSE – Part 1
In the coastal city of Atami, the sudden disappearance of a group of surfers causes fear among the population. Lucky for them, the SV2 team happen to be there on vacation and start investigating together with an oceanographer. Shortly thereafter, rumor of a sea-monster spreads beyond the borders of the town, attracting tourists who want to see a Mecha vs Kaiju fight. And that's where things get really weird.

Episode 6: GIANT MONSTER ON THE LOOSE – Part 2
With the appearance of the monster from episode 5, all hell breaks loose in the city of Atami. But things aren't exactly as they seem and the SV2 crew finds themselves ever more baffled by the events that uncurl themselves before them and the cast of strange people they seem to attract. What nefarious plan is behind all the chaos?
