One of the best olympics license game we had in a while
Olympics licensed games for a long time have been one of those throwaway games that is very shallow in its offering.

This game is a definite step in the right direction giving you enough old school flavour but accompanies it with customization options that gives you that extra touch.

While exclusion of some sports category is disappointing, ones that are included gives you good slice of representation of the sport.

Good olympic licensed game
one of the few for 2020 since the games were actually cancelled this year. Sega does a great jo overall and catches the feel of the summer games. Good if you like a variety of sports button mashing!

Probably the best Olympic licensed game in a very, VERY long time. And that's saying something.
It'd be fitting that for the upcoming Summer Olympics (at the time of this review), a city known for being a mecca for video games in the East would present itself as the venue for perhaps the best Olympic video game experience certainly of the past few generations (and coming very close to surpassing the Mario and Sonic series).

SEGA definitely has made the experience of many of these events a lot more enjoyable for what's essentially the same button-mashing experience as those who've played many of the past tie-in games from Olympics past (thankfully, this is no Athens 2004 if you catch my drift). Swimming, the return of the prodigal son baseball, basketball and table tennis still maintain a solid pick-up-and-play foundation.

What holds Tokyo 2020 back from a true Gold medal is still some of the same sticking points of games past: no matter how you try and reinvent the button-mashing wheel, your fingers will need training and endurance for many of these events. Not to mention that for a more widely known and followed Olympic season, a game should not JUST be limited to 32 events. More customization options for in-game avatars would also be appreciated, perhaps more items as nods to SEGA franchises (maybe some love for Fist of the North Star and Ryu ga Gotoku/Yakuza amongst the Sonic items).

The addition of four more sports over the course of the next year in the lead-up to the Games is softened by the fact that they're all free updates. Good on you, SEGA. Especially when one of them is Skateboarding (may not be on Tony Hawk's Pro Skater levels of fun, but take it where you can get it, I suppose).

If you don't have a Switch or 3DS and are looking for a great title to get yourself in the Olympic spirit, you can't go wrong with Tokyo 2020. Yes, it IS the only game in town for non-Nintendo players (and the PC crowd with its' eventual Steam release), but it reminds us that arcade-y sports games still have their place. Not a World Record effort, but much like in the 100m dash, you've got to learn how to walk before you can finish with a 9.34 run. And this is a good start on that path.
