Speak absolutely no Japanese? You can still enjoy Valkyrie Drive.
Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni plays a lot like Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus (which I imported as well, and also played through in English later on) and the UI is structured in much the same way. If you are familiar with how that game plays, then you should have no trouble getting through menus, and simple trial & error got me through both titles in Japanese just fine anyway (just remember O=X/X=O). The combo system has some intricacies, but the training missions have clear, button-based tutorials that guide you through each move at your disposal. I picked it up quickly and the game plays very well- the action is fluid and fun, though the combo system can be a little wonky at times. After about a dozen hours with it, I feel like I know the systems well. Although I have no trouble triggering it and use it as intended, I am a little hazy on the transformation aspect and what exactly my options are for it (ie Drive VS. Second Drive, and there is a combo-based meter I am not sure I understand yet). I still have a lot of the game left to play through- I’m about halfway through after replaying several levels for items or upgrades (plus a lot of time spent in the dressing rooms) and have unlocked 5 of the 7 characters and just opened up a challenge and survival mode. I’m sure I will figure it all out in the end, and as it is, I feel like I have a confident grasp on the title despite not understanding a fucking word of it. :) Lots of “fanservice,” as one would expect, and an added layer to the touch mechanics of Shinovi Versus which essentially turns the groping of your character models into a stat-based mini-game with items as rewards. Definitely skip it if that kind of thing offends you. If Senran Kagura is your cup of tea, Valkyrie Drive Bhikkhuni is a must-import while you wait out the impending English release of Estival Versus. I would have waited out an English translation of VDB, but there has been zero indication that XSEED is even looking to translate the title, so I just went for it. The game is certainly worthy of their attention, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they do eventually option to release it in the US and EU.
