Item Description

Faithful to the Warhammer license, Warhammer: Mark of Chaos puts the focus squarely on the battlefield with a real-time combat system that gives the player unprecedented customization and control of his army. An epic battle rages following a brutal Chaos invasion, where four fully playable armies (Empire, Chaos, Skaven, and High Elves) as well as additional controllable races (Orcs, Dwarfs, Vampires, and Goblins) clash on a massive battlefield.

Over a year has passed since the Great War, during which the brutal Chaos armies swept across the Empire lands. Many fierce battles still rage across the Old World.

Portions of the defeated Chaos armies have retreated to the distant Northern Wastes, while others have fallen to hostile groups. Among these tribes, new Champions rise up in an effort to reunite the Chaos forces, yet eventually all fail. None can match the power of their fallen leader, Asavar Kul.

The united Empire and High Elf forces hunt the Chaos hordes from the Empire territories, still alert because danger lurks around them in the form of smaller enemy warbands that loot the settlements of the border lands.

Now, four powerful armies Empire, Chaos, Skaven and High Elves along with other "dogs of war" including Orcs, Dwarfs, Vampires and Goblins, clash amidst breathtaking scenery in an epic battle for land and power.

Warhammer: Mark Of Chaos
There is a theory floating on the Internet that games with excellent opening cinematics are highly likely to be good plays. Going by that theory, Warhammer: Mark Of Chaos is a brilliant game. Two lengthy campaigns focus on the arrival of a Daemon Prince from the North and his rampage southwards, as told by the folks in the good and evil camps. Intermingled with the standard human races of the Britonnians and Nords are other fantasy peoples such as dwarves, elves, Orks and Skaven ratmen races to fight against and control. Mark Of Chaos (MoC) is anything but standard real-time strategy fare, focusing instead on unit tactics and morale. With no building to construct, very little to worry about by way of resources, and highly destructive clashes between opposing sides before sudden lulls in battle, the game favours the cautious player.

The game makes it easy for you to be cautious: it lays out all required information in a unit\'s banner that floats above their heads. Morale, unit strength and their stamina are available at a glance, making it easy to quickly pick out and call for the retreat of units badly hurt in battle. Thrown into this scenario are Hero units, who have talent skill trees into which they pool points as they level up. The refreshing take on this, however, is that each hero has three separate trees focused on enhancing either themselves, the unit they are attached to, or their prowess in hero versus hero fights. It is impossible to fully level all three, making it important to choose the right skills for each hero.

Heroes are the stars of the game, being able to fling fireballs, shield their units, and single-handedly wipe out entire enemy units. Duelling heroes bring up a unique system where they both fight to the death while their army clashes around them. Winning (or being forced to flee the fight) effects the morale of everyone around them, creating good incentive to go mano-a-mano with enemy commanders under heavy attack. However, MoC\'s weakness is its focus on morale above all else. Your numerically and physically weaker units can often swing the battle by simply sitting still and peppering enemies who come in range with arrows and ballista fire to reduce the opponent\'s morale. Eventually, fleeing enemies and attrition will take their toll and your own footmen can easily move in to mop up for the kill. A boring but easy fight.

The main map screen, where players go to purchase units, upgrades and items for their heroes, is also a drab and lifeless place. It could have been much more, but the generous use of browns to color the world gives the appropriate sense of your being in a world wracked by the forces of chaos itself. If the Total War series of games is too far-reaching, if Command & Conquer 3 is too fast-paced, if you\'d rather they did away with resources and focused on fighting, Mark Of Chaos and its Heroes are looking for you.
