The big clock in the square says it’s 3:21 am, I’m wandering around the city to check if there’s any survivor besides me. In the distance, I hear the noise of the ambulance sirens, while many emergency convoys stuffed with essentials like water and food, tear down the road toward the evacuation centers where adults can find a little solace, and children can play. Children are surely the firsts ones who need help because try to re-create a normal environment is the best solution to let avoid them long-term trauma. What until a few hours ago was a common Japanese metropolis, now is just a sort of wasteland filled with wreckage and suffering; the TV news says that the situation is under control and that all the authorities are constantly monitoring it, LIARS! They aren’t here, and they don’t know how what does it means to see the skyscrapers collapse in front of you… I’m tired, better find a safe place and take a nap, these difficulties and fatigue hit me hard. What am I doing here?

Friday, July 20

On the road at 7 am, the officials have confirmed that more than 10,000 residents are missing; I’m trying to help as many people as I can providing all the essential goods like food, water, and blankets and offering some psychological help. I meet a little girl, maybe she has 10 years-old, she tells me: “look around, there are many people which are in worse situations than me. I am OK. My family is OK. Get your aid to the others, the ones who really need help.” I’m astonished of her bravery, and almost unknowingly I start to cry… In the noon I’ve luckily found a konbini which has a lot of instant ramens and dried fish, I’ve bought all to distribute some food to the people; some of them thanked me warmly…some not…but I don’t care. A newcast just said that tomorrow trains will return on duty; I don’t know what’s the best thing to do. Should I escape or should I stay here to help all those hopeless families? Maybe tomorrow everything will be clearer.
