According to many traditional tales and legends; there are many different species of Oni, all of which have very similar characteristics and inhabit remote areas in Japan, and among the circles of Hell.
Big, malicious, and cruel; these creatures are extremely dangerous, and due to their supernatural strength normally a person who meets them run into certain death.
An average Oni weighs around 500kg and can be 4 meters tall; although through the centuries taller specimen have been seen. Once they detect the presence of prey, they’re are extremely effective at catching it using their stalking approach and their powerful bodies.
It is said that these specific demons are originated by evil humans who after the death become the faithful servants of the Great Lord Enma, the supreme ruler of 16 Buddhist Hells (Arbuda, Nirarbuda, Aṭaṭa, Hahava, Huhuva, Utpala, Padma, Mahāpadma, Sañjīva, Kālasūtra, Saṃghāta, Raurava, Mahāraurava, Tapana, Pratāpana, and Avīci).
Armed with a mighty iron club their favorite pastime is to torment humans in many ways both physically and spiritually since many Oni are also skilled warlocks.
Over time they turned from ferocious scary beings to pop-icons appearing in thousands of manga, anime, and video games. Anime like Urusei Yatsura, GeGeGe no Kitaro, and Yokai Watch portrayed them in a more friendly way. But, there’s a video game series who bring them back to the ancient glory; obviously, we’re talking of Onimusha!
Set in the turbulent Sengoku Era; it sees the samurai Akechi Samanosuke fight against the dark lord Oda Nobunaga which objective is to unify the whole Land of the Rising Sun exploiting the power of the Genma race, a frightful specimen of demons.
Acclaimed everywhere, Onimusha sold about 10 million copies worldwide making it the 4th most important IP developed by Capcom; in the three top positions, there are Resident Evil, Mega Man and Street Fighter. Including the special appearance of Jean Reno as Jacques Blanc in the third installment; it retells the history of Japan dressing it with many tasteful supernatural aspects.
