Back when the latest installment in the Fire Emblem franchise, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, was announced early this year, not much was known about the game until the Nintendo Direct in February. The game was the centerpiece of the Nintendo Direct presentation and even got an extended trailer revealing tons of narrative details, gameplay, and discoveries of how characters will form bonds.

Recently, Nintendo has unveiled a plethora of information for Fire Emblem: Three Houses, in the latest issue of Famitsu Magazine, including various characters, gameplay elements, a nearly 100 pieces of screenshots, and more.

The Story of Three Territories, Three Houses, and You
Troops filling the plains, a violent clash, a battle brought to its end, and a mysterious girl who appears in the aftermath. This is the strange dream that the protagonist, a member of the mercenary army led by their father, has every night. One day, after having that dream so many times, the protagonist encounters a group of youths attacked by a bandit. Just when the protagonist jumps to protect them from the bandit’s dagger, time comes to a halt, and the girl from the their dreams appears. The girl, Sothis, saved the protagonist’s life with “the power to rewind time.” After telling the protagonist she will lend them her power, she again disappears. The protagonist learns that the youth attacked by the thieves are students of the Garreg Mach Monastery Officer’s Academy, as well as the future leaders of the three major powers of Fodlan. Recognized for their strength in saving the youths, the protagonist is invited to the Academy as a teacher… That encounter was the catalyst of the protagonist’s involvement in an ill-omened fate.
The Three Countries of Fodlan and the Garreg Mach Monastery
There are three countries in Fodlan, where the story of Fire Emblem: Three Housesis set. With a history spanning over a millennium, the Adrestian Empire rules the southern half of Fodlan. In the north, the cold lands of the Holy Kingdom of Faerghus is governed by a king and his knights. And the Lecester Alliance is a cooperative body ruled by a collective of prominent nobles in the east. While violent war broke out among these three countries in the past, they now maintain a balance of power. At the center of the three countries is the Garreg Mach Monastery, the headquarters of the Church of Seiros, which worships the goddess that protects Fodlan. The Monastery has an academy where the youths who will forge the future of Fodlan study and train every day.
The Fate that Awaits You as a Mentor
The player, valued for their skills in defeating the bandit, will lead the students of the Officer’s Academy’s three houses as a professor. The class representatives of each house hail from the three countries of Fodlan, who know that they are fated to lead their country in the future. The guidance of the protagonist will not only influence the students’ fate, but perhaps also the fate of Fodlan…
Characters
Protagonist
As a player, you are either a male with a default name of Byleth or a female who’s known as Bylese–Mercenary who travels with a group and is under the command of your father named Jeralt.
In the beginning, you originally work as a mercenary, but due to your exceptional talents, you will be recruited to teach at the military academy. Sadly, your mother has passed away and you now live with your father, who used to be the leader of Knights of Seiros but now leads a mercenary band.
Jeralt
Jeralt is a living legend who is known to be the strongest knight in history. He is invited to the Monastery alongside the protagonist, which makes him return to the Knights again.
Sothis
Sothis is a mysterious young girl who surprisingly speaks in an old manner. She has the capacity to rewind the time and saves the protagonist on a fated night. Since she normally does not reveal herself and communicates with the protagonist with telepathy directly into the protagonist’s head, no one is aware of her existence. Also, she has lost the memories of herself.
The Young Future Leaders that Bear the Future of Fodlan
The students of the Officer’s Academy are divided into three houses based on their home country. At the beginning of the game, the player can choose from one of the three houses to lead.
Black Eagles (Adrestian Empire) – Princess Edelgard von Hraesvelgr
She is the imperial princess of the Adrestian Empire who has been promised with the position of the next empress. She is a talented woman who has a cold and noble character.
Blue Lions (Faerghus) – Dimitri Alexandre Bladud
Prince Dimitri is the leader of the Blue Lions and is the next in line to become the king of Faerghus. He is a refreshingly friendly young man who is embodied by politeness and chivalry but is also somewhat mysterious.
Golden Deer (Lecester Alliance) – Claude von Regan
Claude von Regan is the leader of the Golden Deer class. He is the son of the Regan family, which heads the newly formed community of nobles, the Leicester Alliance. He is a young man with a friendly aura. Although he seems like the type that doesn’t think too deeply about things, he is actually a person who has a sharp insight.
Gameplay
Fire Emblem: Three Houses will include choices for difficulty at normal or hard, plus you can also choose between casual or classic mode. Also, Three Houses is confirmed to feature a time rewind system, which is made possible because of Sothis’ power to turn back time.
Furthermore, the game is also set to have various terrain effects, which greatly affect combat not only in terms of movement costs and evasion rates but also with gimmicks such as heals or even warps.
More so, changing classes have been redone to use a Qualification Exam system. Characters need to spend Exam Passes and the chance of passing a class exam improves with higher skill ranks. Once a new class has been unlocked for the character, they can freely change back anytime. Unlike most past mainline FE games, there are no changes to a character’s weapon types, and the character level won’t go back to Lv1 when changing class. Certain classes will also earn specific bonuses, such as that class’s fixed skills.

- Weapon & Class proficiencies are now reclassified as Ability Levels. While all characters can exhibit all Abilities, each specific character has a set of Abilities intrinsic to the character that they good or poor with. These Abilities include the following:
- Sword Skill
- Spear Skill
- Axe Skill
- Bow Skill
- Reason (for Black & Dark magic)
- Faith (for White magic)
- Flying (for Flier classes)
- Heavy Armor (for Armored classes)
- Horseback (for Cavalry classes)
- These Abilities can be ranked up and when higher ranks are achieved, certain bonuses or skills are rewarded to the character. Such bonuses include:
- Sword Skill Lv.1 (Sword)- When equipping Sword, Accuracy +5, Evasion +7, Critical Evade +5
- Swordslayer (Lance) – When equipping Spear and fighting against Sword enemy, Accuracy & Evasion +20
- Axe Skill Lv.1 (Axe) – When equipping Axe, Accuracy +7, Evasion +5, Critical Evade +5
- Close Range Counter (Bow) – Allows counter-attacks with a bow when attacked from close range
- Reason Lv.1 (Black/Dark Magic) – When equipping Black or Dark Magic, Accuracy +7, Evasion +5, Critical Evade +5
- Faith Lv.1 (Faith) – When equipping White Magic, Accuracy +5, Evasion +7, Critical Evade +5
