As you maybe already know, Japan is probably the country with the biggest number of supernatural beings. Since the 8^th Century, many tales about these mysterious creatures started to appear throughout the archipelago. Talking foxes, long-nosed goblins, sentient invisible walls, and many other ones belong all to a single race: Yōkai!

Divided by several subclasses; we can find evil western-like ghosts who aim to attack humans in search of revenge or to fix unfinished business like Yūrei or spirits (not necessarily belong to the dead) that share this planet with all the other living creatures; they are commonly known as Obake. This term means “something that change”, and it’s referred to a large number of beings including animals, plants, and even inanimate objects that for one reason or another they contain a spirit within them. A couple of examples will make the things clearer, appearing in a large number of books, anime, manga, and movies, the Kodama from Princess Mononoke to Stephen King’s Christine, in which a beautiful 1958 Plymouth Fury have a personality and a mind.
Recent studies revealed that Obake came from original Hawaiian culture; indeed, in both countries, we can meet kappa (a humanoid amphibious imp who live in the rivers) or the Noppera-bō (a faceless spirit who likes to fright people). This demonstrates that there are strong analogies in both mythologies and beliefs.

Present in our daily life; Obake also often decorate spooky houses, act in kabuki plays, and haunt video games. A typical example is Yomawari series for PSVita, PS4, and NS in which a girl realizes that at night her hometown turns into a ghostly reign, changing radically from the place that people see, and live during the daytime.
