If you are planning to create multiple islands on Animal Crossing: New Horizons once it debuted on Nintendo Switch in March, Nintendo actually released some finer details about the game specifically its user limits. According to Nintendo of Australia’s official web page, only one island can exist per console regardless of the number of users registered and the copies of the game played in the console.
You can check out the publisher’s exact words below with a special note highlighting the user limits:
*Up to 8 players registered as users on a Nintendo Switch console can live on one shared island, and up to four residents of one island can play simultaneously on one console. Please note: only one island can exist per Nintendo Switch console, irrespective of the number of users registered to or copies of the game used on one console. One Nintendo Switch and one copy of the game is required for each unique island.
Alternatively, up to eight people can play together on one island via local wireless or online play.
Internet connection required during online play. To use online services, you must create a Nintendo Account and accept the related agreement. The Nintendo Account Privacy Policy applies. Some online services may not be available in all countries. Online play requires paid online membership.
As disappointing it may sound, this isn’t the first time that had happened to the series. The 2001-released Animal Crossing on GameCube has the same case where only four players can play locally in a single town.

What to Expect?
The game brings you on a deserted island with a bucket full of new features that await you in your new adventure. From building, designing your house from scratch, crafting tools, taking pictures with your Nook Phone and so much more. Yes, you will now own a mobile phone!
But, of course, our mortgage guy, Tom Nook, still plays a big role in the game. In the trailer revealed at E3, Tom Nook was shown charging the player a sum of over 49,000 Bells for the taxes, accommodation, airfare, the Nook Phone, and more. Ah, Nook never changed.
Furthermore, one of the many new elements of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is the pole vaulting. And it looks like it is the easiest way for you to get over a river without a bridge nearby.
Moreover, your mobile phone in this game will be called NookPhone. It is included in your Deserted Island Getaway Package from Tom Nook of Nook Inc. You can use it to access an in-game Camera, view Nook Miles, DIY Recipes, open the Map, and use the Call Islander option to host another Deserted Island resident via local co-op and help you assist with certain tasks.
Also, the in-game Camera of your NookPhone contains a feature that can be found in real-life phone cameras– filters. Yes, you read that right. You can apply filters on your photos and can even decorate it a little bit more with some facial expressions. Strike a pose!
