When a demon's castle darkens the land, two sisters challenge its halls. Together they can break the curse. Development has begun on a 2D action platformer starring two demon hunters on a mission to save their school!
The stars of Grim Guardians are the long-distance focused “Shinobu Kamizono” and the close-range brawler “Maya Kamizono.” Players will need to consider the situation when choosing which sister to control as they make their way through the castle, investigating the mystery of what happened to their school and its students.

I'm really glad on online forum pointed me to this game, otherwise I'm sure I would have missed it.
Side note:
I purchased this version specifically for the name "Grim Guardians", because I think it's dumb that the game had to be renamed in the US. I also think it's dumb the update slipped through so my switch says "Gal Guardians" on screen anyway. 🤦 Aside from that name change, the game isn't affected at all.
Firstly I highly recommend playing with Japanese voices. I played in English and the majority of the game was not voiced. In Japanese, there is a lot more voice acting.
It generally flows like a gameplay crossover between MegaMan X and Castlevania.
I say that knowing that in the original MMX games, you could gain more power-ups by going back to stages.
Here, you can do that and more.
I say the game has some confusing design choices because you really want to explore the levels, yet there is no stage map and some doors lock you out of going back with no recourse except to restart the stage. I didn't appreciate that.
Aside from that, it's a great experience.
