Innovative and incredibly useful
With 200 recipes to choose from amongst it's features, the DS Oryouri Nabi is definitely useful for the bilingual chef.
Speaking Japanese is not a must for this one...but without some comprehension skills: it's nearly impossible to follow the recipes. Without language skills one could still enjoy other features like the short video clips that show different techniques (like hot to cut a zucchini rangiri-style). The videos are amazing high-quality, too.
It contains a small encyclopedia of ingredients and utensils, giving you a rundown of the basics. In addition, the speech recognition on this thing is phenomenal. It cancels out most background noise so unless you're saying a command: it's waiting with the page of the cookbook open where you left it. Occasionally, a sudden noise or ignorant person chatting in the background of your kitchen will trigger the Nabi to change the page of the recipe or just let you know it didn't understand you.
It also features a user-memo feature. This greets you with a personalized message upon startup. It's like an advanced text-to-speech function. This is super cool since you can type any Japanese phrases you'd like and have Chef say them for you. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who likes to cook in Japanese.
